Hi everyone!

I’m Alexander Dalheimer, a PhD student in the ERC-funded PARTISAN project, led by Markus Wagner. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Administration from the University of Konstanz and a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Cologne.

My research focuses on the origins of partisan conflict and affective polarization. I investigae why voters of different parties increasingly dislike and avoid each other across many liberal democracies, exploring both micro- and macro-level explanations. In particular, I study the roles of partisan meta-perceptions, political identity, policy disagreements, stereotypes and the impact of the electoral success of populist radical-right parties.

I primarily work with quantitative methods, drawing on a variety of data sources. Thanks to the PARTISAN project, I have the opportunity to collect and analyze cross-national survey data from more than ten countries and to run survey experiments. Moreover, I also leverage quasi-experimental and computational methods to answer some of my research questions.
